Loft Insulation Grants are still available in Swansea and throughout West Wales?

The Government Home Insulation Grant Scheme changed again on 17/9/18

In some ways it is an improvement over the old scheme, but other aspects have got a whole lot worse.

The Standard Home Insulation Grant that everyone qualified for (even Richard Branson) has been withdrawn.

The Enhanced Home Insulation Grant – which you have to qualify for, has been broadened. Many people who did not qualify for this grant in the past will now qualify.

There is also a new Flexible Loft Insulation Government Grant scheme available which is not based on benefits.

We do of course undertake work where the customer simply pays for the job where no funding is available, i.e. where the existing insulation is greater that 100mm (4 inches), or they do not qualify for a Grant on either of the above schemes.

How is Loft Insulation Funded?

The Government has massive European targets to reduce Carbon Emissions. To achieve this the Government gave the Utility companies a Legal Obligation to reduce Carbon Emissions. This is known as the Energy Companies Obligation or ECO for short.

The Grant scheme no longer requires an energy assessment to calculate the amount of Carbon Emissions saved. Instead, the Government have "deemed" an amount of Carbon Emission savings for each type of property. The problem with this, is you get the same level of funding whether you have no insulation or 100mm (4 inches) of insulation. So those with 100mm will benefit at the cost of those who have no loft insulation whatsoever.

We then sell these Carbon Emission savings to one of the Gas and Electricity companies - and that funds it.

We all pay an amount on our fuel bills towards this fund, so yes, we pay for it, as usual.

Is my Loft suitable for insulating?

We carryout a thorough survey of the loft space to confirm it's suitability. Any findings or concerns are then discussed with you. These could include but not limited to - damp, ceiling cracks, high amp cables, downlighters, wasps nests, evidence of rodents, condensation etc.

If Bats are present, you cannot have your loft insulated - they are a protected species, and must not be disturbed. However, the loft can be insulated during their "away period".

How is Loft insulation installed?

Man insulating the loft

We don't use the "itchy stuff" any more.

We use what can be described as a "quilt", which "you could comfortably sleep on" according to the manufacture.

The rolls are brought into the house in "poly bags" and taken into the loft, where the insulation is removed from the bags.

The first layer of insulation is then laid between the joists, and a second layer is then laid at right angles to the first layer, that is across the joists.

The second layer effectively seals the heat into the bedrooms - keeping them lovely and warm in the winter, but pleasingly cool in the summer.

The recommended depth of loft insulation is 270mm ( 11 inches).

Our technicians will then ensure that there is sufficient ventilation within the loft space. Each loft will have it's own set of circumstances such as downlighters, electicity cables etc., but these would have been noted during the initial survey and discussed with the customer.

An average semi-detached house would be completed in less than 2 hours, the empty bags removed and no mess to be seen.

And to give you peace of mind all our technicians are fully insured.

Rafter Insulation

We do not install "rafter" insulation. There are 2 main reasons for this.

Firstly, I just don't see the point of it. Yes, it stops the heat from leaving the house, but does not stop the heat from leaving the "living space". It only serves to heat the loft space at the cost of the bedrooms.

However, our second reason is somewhat scary. Rafter insulation normally takes the form of "foam insulation" and this forms a bond with the roof.

I had read horror stories online where a problem had arisen with a tile letting in water etc and because of the bond formed by the foam insulation the whole roof had to be removed.

In August 2016 I had a call from a customer in Whitchurch, Cardiff where that exact same situation had arisen, and he had to have the roof replaced at a cost of just under £7,000.

Insulation is supposed to save you money not cost you £1,000's.
